The Black Badge- An invitation for people to speak to us

Another thought that Dick and I have had recently, we are absolutely amazed that when we are in public and are wearing our missionary black tags, everyone wants to talk to us. We frequently joke that we must have a sign on our chest that reads, "Speak to me, I'm lonely". It must be a Utah thing, but it really is amazing that people have no fear or trepidation in speaking to us. Our badges invite conversation, we think. People seeing our badges react in the following way: they see our badge, study our profiles to our faces, smile at us and ask "Where are you from". We have learned that our first response we give puzzles them. We say that we are from the Ogden Mission. People will then go on to ask, but what I wanted to know is are you from around here. We then mention that we work in the Ogden Mission office with the President but we get to live at home. They then ask, well, where is home, and we respond Farmington.

That conversation is a lot more fun that just immediately answering we are from Farmington. But people see the badges and it is as if the badges cry out to them "Talk to Me". Just a week ago, a man from the car shop was bringing Elder Lund back to the office and guess what, he noticed dads badge and started talking to him. By the time they got back to the office, Elder Lund was giving this man material to read and was starting on a referral. So I guess it is ok to wear the badges. We just wonder what the nest person who talks to us will ask us. So until then, we will keep wearing the badges and see what they shout out to people.
